Abbottstown, PA (August 19, 2000) – Fred Rahmer earned his 12th Lincoln Speedway victory of the season after a hard fought battle to the checkered flag with veteran driver Bobby Weaver.
“That was a good race. That Bobby Weaver was running. Without lapped cars, he was the fastest car here. When we came to those lapped cars, I got a little bit lucky,” Rahmer said.
On the first lap, Rahmer quickly dismissed Steve Siegel, Johnny Mackison Jr. Jame Chesson, Mike Lutz, and Dave Ely to move from his twelfth starting position to seventh.
Two laps later he moved to fifth.
While Bobby Weaver pulled away with a handsome lead, Rahmer had to contend with Jeff Rohrbaugh in the Weikert Livestock car. Rohrbaugh was running strong and it took Rahmer several laps to find his way around the famous No. 29 car.
After getting around Rohrbaugh, Rahmer made quick work of Jesse Wentz to take third behind Weaver and Cris Eash in second.
Weaver’s advantage was erased on lap nine when Gordon Senft and Greg Klarr stopped in turn four to bring out the evening’s only caution flag.
Weaver lined up for the restart with Eash in second and Rahmer in third. One lapped car was sandwiched between each of the top three cars, allowing Weaver to enjoy a comfortable lead once green flag racing resumed.
On lap 12, Eash bobbled in turn one allowing Weaver to stretch his lead even further. It also allowed Rahmer to get within striking distance of second place.
A second bobble in turn one by Eash three laps later, cost him second place as Rahmer easily motored past.
In the final ten laps, both Weaver and Rahmer had to contend with heavy lapped traffic, but Rahmer consistently cut into Weaver’s lead on every lap. Traffic allowed Rahmer to close the gap on lap twenty two, but Weaver had no intention of handing Rahmer the lead.
With two to go, a small slip in turn four allowed Rahmer to pull alongside as the pair raced to complete the twenty third lap. They raced side by side down the backstretch on lap twenty four with Rahmer taking the advantage into turn three. Weaver looked under Rahmer exiting turn four and nearly regained the lead.
“Old Bobby, he was pretty hungry.,” Rahmer said. “I got him down there in three. I knew he wanted it back pretty bad. I should have went in and sort of blocked him, but I didn’t. I thought I’d be okay. He came right up there across, I knew he carrying a lot of speed. I run him into three pretty ugly to get the win, but you do what you have to do.”
Cris Eash regained his composure to challenge Weaver for second on the last lap, but it was too little too late as Weaver secured second place, followed by Eash, and Wentz with Mackison rounding out the top five.
