Supermodified driving star Greg Furlong enters Atlantic City Indoor Race.
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - Mark Greg Furlong down as a favorite to win the Atlantic City Indoor Race, presented by Neptune Research and the Green Flag Driving Experience, at Boardwalk Hall on Sat., January 18, 2003.
Furlong, after all, is a young talent who knows how to get a Three-Quarter Midget around a flat arena oval. He's the reigning Niagara Falls Convention Center Indoor Midget Series champion, so his reputation precedes him.
"I know Greg really wants to win the race," said Pat Pontello, the Camillus, N.Y., businessman who will field Furlong's TQ Midget. "We're going down there and giving him every opportunity to do it."
Furlong, 30, of Fulton, N.Y., is best known as a budding Supermodified star. His credentials include the 2000 championship at Oswego (N.Y.) Speedway and victories in the famed paved track's prestigious Budweiser International Classic 200 in 1999 and 2000. This year he began following the International Supermodified Association tour for the first time and emerged triumphant twice.
Earlier this season Furlong steered Pontello's TQ -- a lookalike of Furlong's No. 72 Supermodified -- to the championship of the 2001-02 Niagara Falls Indoor Series. He can't defend his title this winter because the addition of casino gambling at the Convention Center ended the Niagara events, so he's looking to make Atlantic City the place where he gets his off-season racing thrills.
Furlong will drive the same TQ Midget he campaigned so successfully at Niagara Falls. Pontello has also entered himself to drive a second car at Atlantic City, but his decision to compete won't interfere with Furlong's effort.
"We're focusing on Greg,' said Pontello, who has entered a third car but hasn't decided whether to put another driver in the seat or keep it as insurance for Furlong.
The entry list for the TQ Midget spectacular was over the 80 mark as of Monday.
