Race fans welcomed the American Racing Drivers Club to Elizabeth City North Carolina on Friday night. While temperatures had risen into the low 100's, it couldn't keep the fans away.
The ARDC midgets heated up the track as Ray Bull, Bloomsburg PA, made a last lap pass to claim his seventh feature win of the season.
From the drop of the green, it had been Bryan Kobylarz, Birdsboro PA, who lead the field. Kobylarz started fourth and had opened a 2-car length advantage when the first caution flew. Scott Zipp, Bridgeport PA, spun going out of turn 1. Coming around to take the yellow, Jim Jackson, Sweet Valley PA, tagged the turn 3 wall. Jackson was running in sixth position and would then retire from the event.
Back under green flag racing, it was Gary Halteman, Gilbertsville PA, making some noise. Halteman who started fourth brought out the next caution. He spun on the inside of turns three and four.
The intensity continued to mount as the center of the pack raced three abreast.
Walt Stearly, Trappe PA; Tim Dietz, York PA; Randy Mausteller, Bloomsburg PA; Buddy Baker, Limerick PA; and Jimmy Stitzel, Blandon PA all jockeyed for position. Points leader Ray Bull and Ed Stimely Jr., McVeytown PA, started mid pack and found themselves running in the top 5.
Baker picked up his first top-10 finish in ARDC midget competition.
While Kobylarz continued to power away from the field, Lew Blair, Hartsville PA, was hot on his trail. Blair who ran strong never relinquished his second place position.
'Lew Blair had a great run,' said Bull, 'I chased him for what seems like forever. Then, I changed my line and was able to pass him with four to go.'
When Bull made the last lap pass on Kobylarz, Blair followed him to claim second place honors.
'It didn't seem like I was good,' said Bull, 'Then I started to find a line, and I was closing in (on the leaders.)' Bull who won his seventh feature this season enjoys running at Dixieland. 'This is a very slick racetrack,' said Bull, 'It is in great shape.'
Blair credits his team with a great effort. 'Everything just went well,' said Blair who enjoys running with ARDC.
