Lonnie Wheatley - TULSA, Okla. (January 7, 2003) - A trio of past Chili Bowl Midget Nationals winners, including four-time champion Sammy Swindell, headline the list of competitors slated for Wednesday night's Bud Shootout Qualifying, which kicks off the 17th Annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals at Tulsa Expo Raceway.
Joining Swindell, who will be seeking an unprecedented fifth Chili Bowl title, will be 2001 winner Jay Drake and seven-time BMARA champion and 1999 Chili Bowl winner Dan Boorse. Danny Lasoski, 2001 World of Outlaws champion and perennial Chili Bowl contender, is among other top drivers set to compete on Wednesday night.
Drake will be pursuing his second Chili Bowl victory in as many tries, as he was unable to defend his title last year due to injury. Drake has bounced back in strong fashion this year, scoring several major victories including the Midget portion of Eldora Speedway's Four-Crown Nationals.
Other top competitors that will be in Bud Shootout Qualifying action include nine-time NCRA Outlaw Sprint Car champion Gary Wright, Troy Rutherford, Jerry Coons, Jr., A.J. Fike, MARA midget champion Steve Knepper and 2000 Chili Bowl runner-up Shane Cottle.
With more than 200 cars entered for the 17th Annual Chili Bowl Nationals, approximately 70 drivers from throughout the nation will be in action on Wednesday night, vying for starting positions in Saturday night's Chili Bowl nationals finale.
