Kawartha Speedway, Peterborough, Ontario - Etobicoke's Andy Mackereth took the final checkers of the 2001 season for the Castrol Can-Am Midgets this past Sunday. Andy took his fifth win of the year, the most by anyone but it was Adam Walsh who came away with the points championship with three wins of his own. Walsh narrowly edged out 1999 champion Jeff Riberdy for the title by a mere 19 points. Jeff had three feature wins also this year. Mackereth rounded out the top three in points after a couple of late season DNF's stalled his quest for a second consecutive crown.
The start of the race had Dave Macintosh on the pole with David Balych outside but the field had to stop before the green to clean up an oil spill caused by a failure on the 99 car of Kelleigh Lang. When the field got restarted, Macintosh's #90 car failed giving Balych in the 12 the pole with the 82 of James Gray outside. Balych grabbed the early lead with Andy Mackereth and the rest of the pack on his tail. Mackereth made the winning move on lap 4 putting his #40 into the lead heading into the third turn. Two laps later, Ken Lorenz came by to take second from Balych as the #12 car started to fade. Riberdy was on the move already up to third which became second when he displaced Lorenz for second. While Riberdy in the #6 tried to track down leader Mackereth, the 74 of Ken Lorenz slid back through the order. Randy May came up to third battling hard with Adam Walsh for the spot. The race ran green to checkers with Mackereth taking the win followed by Riberdy May in the 23, Walsh in the 49 and Crawford rounding out the top 5 in the #10 machine.
It has been a great season for the TQ's with positions in points throughout the top ten going right down to the wire. The club would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors who have supported the club during the year to make the 2001 season possible. Special thanks to Castrol, Crooks Wire Products, Hoosier, Arlington Crane and ITB Transportation for their contributions during the year.
Last week's feature winner Colin Turnbull did not make the trek to Kawartha for the final due to engine woes. Due to this, Colin slipped to 10th in the final points standings.
