Bull flies to 9 at Fulton
Fulton NY - Ray Bull claimed his ninth feature win of the season when the Ray's Yamaha 'Polaris' Victory American Racing Drivers Club Midget Series visited Fulton Speedway on Saturday night.
From the outside pole position Tracy Miller lead the field to the green flag. Three and four-wide racing across the start/finish line was to the crowds delight.
Miller would hold the top position until lap 8, when the caution flew for the stopped car of Kathy Kurtz. On the restart, Steve Buckwalter and Bull lined up behind Miller. One lap later and Bull had swung past both drivers. Bull favored the inside line, while Buckwalter was strong on the high banking.
Bull would not relinquish the lead. Buckwalter did not let Bull out of his sights. Behind the top 3, was Andy Martin and Mike Miller. Mike Miller started in the twelfth starting spot and found himself in fifth on lap 11. Behind Miller, Ed Stimely and Dave Shirk battled for position. Miller swung high in the corners and preferred the outside line around the track. Miller would surpass Martin and be in the fourth when the caution flew on lap 14 for the spinning car of Carey Becker.
Mike Miller would find third place in two more rotations. Getting past his team car of Steve Buckwalter on lap 18, Mike Miller set his sights on Bull. Within striking distance, the laps would conclude giving Bull his ninth feature win of the season by a slim margin.
Bull preferred the inside line at Fulton Speedway, 'I felt it was the only place to be,' said Bull, 'It was working.' For Bull, the Fulton facility reminds him of Lincoln Speedway. 'There is tough competition,' he said, 'you need to get to the front first.'
For Mike Miller, it was a good night. 'This is good racing high and low. A first class facility, the track was awesome dry and slick,' said Miller. 'It was fast and wide,' he continued, It is nice driving with drivers that like to drive.'
For Buckwalter third place was well suited. 'We are getting the motor figured out. We got hot,' he continued. 'This is a good midget track it reminds me of Grandview Speedway. I would like to come back next year, I like the banking here.'
For Martin, the same can be said. Martin finished fourth in only his third midget start. 'If it has four wheels, I'll race it. But (midgets) are bigger and more professional. I like it a lot,' he said. The Ray's Yamaha 'Polaris' Victory American Racing Drivers Club Midget Series moves on to Linda's Speedway on Friday Night August 27. The midget drivers will again show versatility as they prepare to run a wingless event.
As the season heads into the final month of competition for the midget championship contenders the top two points positions are seperated by a 57 point differential between Ray Bull and Mike Miller. Steve Buckwalter may be the dark horse in this competition as he continues to gain on the leaders.
