VISTEON PANOZ RACING TEAM PRESS NOTES
24 HOURS OF LE MANS
Race Notes Two, 00:45
Sunday, 7 June 1998
The #45 Visteon Panoz GTR-1 was running in ninth position overall until midnight, when an electrical problem occurred when the rear lights were intermittently malfunctioning. Once the car was called into the pits with Jamie Davies at the wheel, the team replaced the rear bodywork, but it became apparent that the problem was in the wiring loom. Repairs were made and the car returned to the track 35 minutes later.
David Brabham, driver, #45 Visteon Panoz GTR-1, commenting on his triple stint: "The car is getting better and better -- the guys have been really good at optimizing the car for the track conditions. I had one run where there was quite a lot of cars running together and I could catch all of them. The engine, gearbox, and brakes are really good."
Car #44 continued to have a troubled race. At 22:10, Christophe Tinseau returned to the garage with a gearbox problem. The DAMS team replaced the gear cluster and the car left the pits 25 minutes later. At 23:55 Tinseau suffered a slow tire puncture and suspected a front suspension problem. All front suspension components were checked and the car returned to the race at 00:20.
Eric Bernard, driver, #44 Visteon Motorola DAMS Panoz GTR-1, on his off track at 21:00: "The car was good and everything was running really well until I saw blue flags. I moved over to let a car pass and got off the racing line, and the track was very slippery. I went off into the gravel a little bit thinking it better to do that instead of hit the wall."
