Qualifying Session One - Wednesday 9th June

The first qualifying session for this years Le Mans 24 Hours took place this evening in high temperatures with the RML team running through its planned programme of on track activity with its MG Lola LMP car.

The first two hour segment of qualifying was held in daylight from 7pm - 9pm and gave the teams three drivers, Mike Newton, Tommy Erdos and Nathan Kinch, their first taste of the classic 13.650 km Le Mans circuit since the official test day in April. Nathan was the fastest of the three drivers posting a time of 3.48.147 on hard race rubber.

The second segment of qualifying was run from 10pm until midnight, which enables the drivers to experience the track in darkness. The team had intended to run the first 20 minutes of this segment to improve its grid position by running on soft qualifying tyres. However the track conditions had deteriorated significantly due to a number of cars spinning off and dragging dirt and gravel onto the circuit.

The team utilised the rest of the session to ensure that all three drivers had completed their minimum number of laps in darkness.

Tommy Erdos commented "Our times from the first session were incredibly easy to achieve and I am confident that we can go a lot quicker tomorrow and during the race. We did not want to take any chances today and simply went through our plan of ensuring that all three drivers qualified for the race".

The second qualifying session takes place from on Thursday evening from 7pm CET until midnight, the race commences at 4pm CET on Saturday.
