Third Place Podium finish for Pierre Ehret at 24h of Le Mans with Autorlando-Porsche
During the 75th edition of the 24h of Le Mans on 16./17. June 2007 Pierre Ehret reached a brilliant third place. Together with his teammates Allan Simonsen and Lars-Erik Nielsen, did Pierre Ehret start in a Porsche 997 GT3 RSR of the Italian Autorlando Sport team for the endurance classic.
Already in qualifying it became clear, that the team should have good chances for a top position in the GT2 category. In the first qualifying under dry conditions, one drove the fifth quickest time. The second session took place under rainy conditions and so one was not able to impove lap times, but accomplished the quickest time "Rank five was absolutely OK for us", stated Ehret afterwards.
On Sunday at 3 PM the race was started . Although it was raining and the track was wet at times, the team decided to stick with slick tyres, which was the right decision. "We expected the track to dry quickly and indeed we were right", explained Ehret. Occasionally Autorlando Sport even ran first in class during the first hours of the race.
Without problems the drivers were able to keep up the pace and defended a third rank even against stronger opponents. But at night Nielsen was involved in an incident which forced him into the pits, where the front right side of the car neeeded to be repaired. The damage was repaired quickly by the Autorlando mechanics and one could rejoin the track still being in third place.
But the podium was in danger on Sunday noon, when Simonsen slid into the tire barrier under heayvy rain, damaging the rear wing, front spoiler and radiator. Coming back into the garage for the neccessary repairs, "Porsche supported us perfectly, and was instrumental in helping the Autorlando crew to get the car out again in time to stay in third place", so Ehret, "Without their help we possibly could not have been able to defend our third position"
After 22 minute in the garage one resumed the race and finally ended the race in third place.
Pierre Ehret after the race: "The car of Autorlando Sport was very well prepared and ran flawlessly the entire race.. A great thank to teamchef Orlando Redolfi. The team set the foundation for our success right from the beginning.. During the first hours of the race we made the right tyre choice while others lost much time changing to wets. My stints were very good and I was lucky not to have any yellow flag periods or problems on the track. I think, that we can be happy with rank three and that it is well-deserved. Wit a little bit of luck, rank two might have been possible too, but we do not want to complain."
