Good qualifying for JML Team Panoz at Lemans
"Mad Max" Papis and his JML Team Panoz teammates were back on the track at LeMans Wednesday for day one of qualifying for the 2003 running of the 24 Heures du Mans race.
"I thought we achieved exactly the goal we wanted from when we left here last time at the pre-qualifying weekend," said Papis. "We probably believed we would qualify at about a 3 minute, 40, and that is about where we are so far. Olivier (Beretta) ran strong on the race tires. He did what we had to do."
Beretta ran the top qualifying time for the No. 11 JML Team Panoz with a 3:40.766, which qualified the team for eighth overall in Wednesday's first qualifying session.
"I felt everybody did a really good job and being eighth fastest so far probably has surprised a few people," added Papis. "Overall we have done a better job than what we expected and I am really looking forward to the race because I think the car will be very strong. We achieved a pretty high goal at the moment, better than we expected. We improved greatly. We proved we can run at a strong pace. I feel we're on the right track. It was a very good job for all of us. For me, I basically concentrated on race runs and trying the different tires that Michelin had to offer. I'm very impressed with the support, development and professionalism of Michelin."
The order went Bentley, Bentley, Audi, Audi, Dome, Audi, Dome, Panoz. Tom Kristensen of Team Bentley produced the fastest time of the day with a 3:32.843.
"Tomorrow we're going to put the race engine in and better define the set-up, since today we finished better than expected. We were better than Sebring actually and at Sebring we finished fifth. We'll use Thursday as a set-up."
