Halliday suffers test day frustration at Le Mans
Liz Halliday's debut with new team Del Bello Racing didn't go according to plan at the weekend as she didn't get to drive a single lap at the Le Mans Official Test in the team's LMP2 Courage LC75.
After signing for the French squad last week, the California-born British-based dual sportswoman was looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of an LMP2 car whilst hoping to get some important mileage under her belt ahead of the Le Mans 24 hours on June 16. But she was left frustrated as technical issues and a big accident for team-mate Vitaly Petrov meant the car was limited to just six laps.
After engine wiring problems on Sunday morning, the Courage eventually hit the track just before mid-day, only for Russian GP2 driver Petrov to suffer a huge off at the 'Karting Esses' leaving the car badly damaged. The Del Bello team, with help from Courage's mechanics, worked hard to get the car repaired for the end of the afternoon session, only for a paddle shift issue to curtail hopes of Halliday enjoying some track time.
Whilst understandably downbeat, Halliday admitted it was exciting to be back at Le Mans and backed Del Bello Racing to iron out any lingering technical problems before the 24 Hour race in two weeks time.
"Obviously it's frustrating and I was really disappointed but I guess that's motor racing" Halliday said. "The team had a wiring problem in the morning and then Vitaly had a big accident after just five laps. Thankfully he was ok, but the car was in a pretty bad state. The Courage boys came in to help out and worked really hard to fix it up before the end of the day, but then we had a further problem with the paddle shift with half an hour to go. When the Zytek crashed at the same corner towards the end of the session, the red flags came out and that was the end of that!"
"It was great to be back at Le Mans though. Despite the fact that it was only the test day, there is still a magical atmosphere around the place and in spite of all the problems it has just served to increase my anticipation for the race. Hopefully the team will work hard between now and Le Mans week and these problems won't reoccur."
