Motorsport.com art director Eric Gilbert presents the photos that he actually uses as screen savers (and that he has actually shot, also). He presents those photos on his personal Facebook page and is now sharing them on Motorsport.com. Enjoy.
24 Hours of Le Mans, 2012-06-17. New gold dream.
At 5AM last Sunday at Le Mans, I could see that the sky was clear and that we would obviously have a proper sunrise, so I figured that doing the same thing than in 2011 was appropriate - at Le Mans, one never knows about the sunrise so we better catch it while it's there. So for the second year in a row, I made it to the Dunlop corner, at this very specific spot on the outside where all those 'commissaires' (course marshals) look with some kind of amazement at this massive wall of photographers all there to catch the early moments of the day.
Catching what I like to call the 'Gold hour' (see my story from last year about the same photo) is always a very solemn moment at Le Mans. And I'm not the only one to think this way since whenever I show up at this location, there's always a pretty good contingent of finger-on-the-trigger photographers bursting shots in high speed sequence every time a car flies under the famed Dunlop bridge. Thing is: it seems that most of them get tired before the 'Gold hour' (around 6h15) and by this time, we're usually only a handful left to immortalize this magic moment, when cars get 'gold'.
This year, the Rebellion Racing Lola (as seen in this photo) looked particularly good in the 'gold hour' light, probably due to the angular shapes on its side pods that were quite 'reflection-friendly'. Just beautiful…
