PARIS, Dec 1 (AFP) - British driver Andy Wallace - a former winner - will be in the cockpit when Cadillac, under parent company General Motors, launch their return to the Le Mans 24 hour race, it was revealed Wednesday. Team leader Herb Fischel was in the French capital Wednesday on a promotional tour for the team, which is returning to high-profile European competition. Fischel said: "We chose the Le Mans 24-hour race to develop our brand in markets outside the United States. That's why we are delighted to have Andy Wallace in our team of drivers." Wallace won the Le Mans race in 1988 and has also triumphed in several other endurance taces such as the Sebring 12 hour race and the Daytona 24 hour race. Fischel added: "A driver does not win so many races by accident so we are very happy to have him on board." Cadillac will have four cars in competition in all. Two will be run directly by the team with Andy Wallace driving the Northstar Le Mans LMP1 and also South African-born American Wayne Taylor and Italian Max Angelelli in the driving pool. Two more will be placed with French stable DAMS-Motorola, who have previously raced with Panoz and Lola in endurance races. Jean-Paul Driot, director of DAMS-Motorola, said that the agreement signed Tuesday evening was a recognition of his company's ability. Driot said: "To put on the track the cars of a constructor like General Motors is a great honour which reflects on our stable but it is also an undertaking that must not fail." Driot named the two French drivers as Jean-Marc Gounon and Eric Bernard. The other drivers engaged to pilot the four Cadillacs, which will have Pirelli tyres, will be announced at a later date.
