The set-up work which was carried out in the first qualifying session of the Le Mans 24-hour race was rewarded, when both BMW V12 LM were clearly faster during the second qualifying session on Thursday, than they had been the day before. The former Formula 1 driverin Team BMW Motorsport, Pierluigi Martini, improved his time by around three seconds and placed himself sixth on the grid, lapping in 3:38.829 minutes, and was thus quickest in the open sportscar category (LMP1). His team-mate Tom Kristensen qualified the second around 550 bhp powered BMW in twelth place overall and third in the LMP1 category, lapping in 3:41.599.
