MENEZES TURNS IN STRONG WSK INTERNATIONAL EFFORT AT SARNO
Young American once again qualifies for main event, posting top-20 result
SARNO, ITALY (March 8, 2009) -- Coming off of a solid top-10 performance at the 14th annual Winter Cup event in Lonato, American karter Gustavo Menezes returned to Italy for the second round of the WSK International Series at the Sarno International Karting circuit on March 5-8. Having missed the main event at the opening round in La Conca, Menezes used the momentum gained from his solid Winter Cup outing just two weeks ago to step up his KF3 performance in both wet and dry conditions, qualifying for the final where he finished in the top-20.
Menezes was in the first of three qualifying groups to hit the circuit, faced with a very damp course. The Tony Kart Junior Racing Team driver was 14th in his session, however, the track continued to dry as the next two groups took to the racing surface for their qualification runs. With the classification adjustments made due to the large time differences between the qualifying groups, Menezes was placed in Group B and would start each of the four heat races from row nine.
The heat races would be Menezes' time to make up for the tough hand that he was dealt in qualifying. In the Group B vs. Group D run, Menezes muscled his way up nine spots to finish an impressive eighth. Only four spots were gained in the A vs. B heat race after falling back to the 20th position, as he worked himself up to 15th. His best performance would follow in the third heat as he advanced up to an amazing fifth in the B vs. E battle. A ninth place finish in the B vs. C flight capped off a solid stint of wheel-to-wheel action for Menezes, classifying him 19th overall and transferring him directly into the Prefinal event.
The 12-lap Prefinal would set the grid for the main event, giving Menezes a chance to improve his starting spot in hopes of another top-10 run. Despite the fierce competition around him and a bad start, Menezes posted times similar to the leaders and moved up to 14th by the time the checkered flag waved to put himself in position to advance even more in the main event. The main event was another 12-lap skirmish that saw a number of position exchanges. Menezes settled into a group, but was shuffled back near the end of the event to record a 19th place finishing position.
Menezes will return to the WSK International series in early April in Castelletto, Italy before heading back to the United States for the opening round of the Stars of Karting Western Division later in the month. Menezes is eager to return to America to utilize his recent experience in Europe, and will be looking to translate that into victory in California.
