After 2 big weekends of road racing, oval-track events on tap
07.15.2009 -- The Bully Clutches Gold Cup Series Spallco R.V. Sales Nationals and Zoom Zoom Nationals for the George Kugler / Bridgestone Manufacturer's Cup Series and Dunlop Tire National Road Racing Series, both driven by Mazda, are now history. But WKA's summer is just heating up, and two straight weekends of oval-track racing are now on the horizon.
The Rage Karts Speedway Pavement Series will return to action this weekend, July 17-19, when the series heads north to Humphrey, New York's Chapel Hill Raceway. Located approximately 60 miles southeast of Buffalo, Chapel Hill is one of the longest running WKA national tracks and this year's 1-800-GOT-JUNK Nationals is sure to be a terrific event.
This year's national event at Chapel Hill marks the resumption of the Speedway Pavement season. WKA's only pavement-oval national series has been off since the April 3-5 Hodge Racing Supply Nationals at North Carolina's OCR Action Sports Park, where Kyle Long, Patrick Robertson, Tyler Robertson, Kyle Soper and Cole Timm had big weekends with multiple feature wins on OCR's two-tenths-mile oval. Those five drivers and the rest of the Speedway Pavement racers will be eager to get back on the track and challenge for the top prizes while racing in the scenic southern tier region of upstate New York.
While the spring months saw a quiet period for the Speedway Pavement tour with no racing in May and June, the series will be in action every month from now until October. The Jammer Clutches Grand Nationals Aug. 21-23 at Indiana's New Castle Motorsports Park will be a dual event with the Gold Cup Series and the third of five 2009 Pavement Series events. The series will return to action Sept. 18-20 for the Pro Kart Racing Karts Nationals at BeaveRun Motorsports Complex in Wampum, Pa. The Bonsignore Kart Shoppe Nationals, the final race of the season, will be run at Riverhead Raceway Oct. 9-11, marking WKA's first ever event at the Long Island track.
The final full weekend of July (24-26) will see the Briggs & Stratton Speedway Dirt Series head to Liberty Raceway Park, a fine dirt track karting facility located in the Piedmont of North Carolina between Greensboro and Raleigh. The National event at Liberty is the third of five 2009 stops on the Dirt tour, and the second in the state of North Carolina.
Following Liberty, the Speedway Dirt tour will head to Kershaw, South Carolina's Hanging Rock Kartway Aug. 14-16 and conclude with the Shadow Racing Chassis Nationals Sept. 11-13 at Alma, Georgia's Hurricane Raceway.
Local option changes announced for Speedway Dirt national at Liberty
07.15.2009 -- The Briggs & Stratton Speedway Dirt Series will head to Liberty (N.C.) Raceway Park for the first time July 24-26, marking the third stop on the five-race 2009 tour.
The National at Liberty will include four local option classes, catering to those who still wish to run their Briggs flathead engines. Saturday's local option classes at Liberty will be Briggs Sr Champ Flathead, (replacing Briggs Lite Flathead), and Briggs Super Heavy Flathead. On Sunday, the two local options run will be Briggs Medium Flathead and Briggs Heavy Flathead.
Staying with the Briggs theme, the Wisconsin-based Briggs & Stratton has again provided WKA with some outstanding prizes to be randomly drawn for at the Saturday morning drivers meeting. As was the case last month at the Speedway Dirt Jimmy Rivers Performance Works Grand Nationals in Dexter, Ga., five lucky racers will receive either a Briggs 2,500-psi Brute by Briggs & Stratton pressure washers or a Briggs 5,550-watt, 10-horsepower portable generator.
The giveaways at Liberty are another prime example of Briggs' continuous support of the Speedway Dirt Series and all of WKA national touring series.
"Racing Dreams" film to be screened July 24 in Indianapolis
07.15.2009 -- "Racing Dreams," an Academy Award Nominated Director Marshall Curry film that documents the racing lives of three WKA Rage Karts Speedway Pavement racers, will be screened at the Indianapolis Film Festival Friday, July 24 during NASCAR's Brickyard 400 weekend. The screening begins at 7 p.m.
The film documents the lives and racing seasons of Pavement racers Annabeth Barnes, Joshua Hobson and Brandon Warren. The "Racing Dreams" Web site states the film "follows three kids during a pivotal, career-making or breaking year, who dream of one day racing in NASCAR. As they race their way through the yearlong Championship series, they also navigate the treacherous road between childhood and young adulthood. In intimate moments of young love and family struggle we experience a time in life when all of us are just beginning to figure out who we are."
"Racing Dreams" debuted in late April, early May at the Tribeca Film in New York, where it won the award for Best Documentary.
No official release date has been set. Look for a future Pit Board announcement with more information on "Racing Dreams."
