Final 2009 SFI/WKA Technical Inspector Seminar And Certification
02.16.2009 -- The last regularly scheduled SFI/WKA 2-cycle and 4-cycle Technical Inspector Seminars will be held on Saturday, February 21, at Kart Expo. Both sessions will begin at 12:30 PM at the Hilton Garden Inn, 4050 E. Main Street, St. Charles, Illinois (West suburban Chicago). The hotel is next to the DuPage Expo Center where Kart Expo is being held. The sessions will conclude around 4:00 PM.
The seminars begin with a discussion of role of the tech inspector, tech room procedures and the protest and appeal process. This information is common to both 4-cycle and 2-cycle inspectors. WKA Executive Director Van Gilder will present this part of the seminar. Then the 4-cycle and 2-cycle groups will separate, and the engine tech inspection sessions will begin.
Mike Everson and Jerry Cole will present the 4-cycle inspection section, and Van Gilder will lead the 2-cycle inspection section. All of the instructors are SFI/WKA Certified. At the conclusion of each section, the open book SFI/WKA examinations will be conducted for those wishing to become certified tech inspectors. 2009 WKA Technical Manuals will be provided to all participants.

Matt Hawkins Tragically Loses Life
02.16.2009 - Matt Hawkins, one of the brightest young stars of the short track world, has passed away at the age of 21. Hawkins lost his life after an incident involving an accidental gun discharge Friday night in Georgia.
On the track, Hawkins had built up an amazing resume. He won over 100 go-kart races including the Triple Crown for the Georgia Dirt Series in 2002 and 2003 and the 2003 World Karting Association Briggs Junior Lite National Championship. He won in his first career starts in both the ARCA REMAX Series and USAR Pro Cup Series, a seemingly impossible accomplishment that may never be matched. Hawkins also won numerous Pro Late Model races in the Southeast and finished in the top three of the Snowball Derby for the last two seasons.
Off the track, Hawkins was known for being an especially kind, polite and personable young man. Everyone at the World Karting Association wishes to extend their deepest sympathies to this young man's family and friends. He will truly be missed.
