Daytona KartWeek 2008 Underway
12.27.2008 - After months of anticipation, the World Karting Association Daytona KartWeek 2008 is now underway at Daytona International Speedway. Warm weather and clear, sunny skies greeted WKA George Kugler/Bridgestone Manufacturer's Cup driven by Mazda and Dunlop Road Racing driven by Mazda teams in Florida this morning. Today's weather appears as if it will set the tone for the rest of the week; sunny skies and 70-degree temperatures are predicted in the Daytona Beach area through the conclusion of KartWeek on Tuesday.
Sounds of 2 and 4 cycle kart engines echo throughout the Daytona infield while both Road Racing and Man Cup pit areas begin to fill in. With large fields of entrants expected in both events at Daytona, teams are concluding last-minute preparation work on their karts before hitting the track for practice Sunday morning.
In addition to the 2009 season openers for two of the five WKA series, two annual awards banquets are planned for the weekend. Sunday night will feature the 2008 Manufacturer's Cup champions being crowned while Monday night will see the Road Racing competitors accepting their awards. Both banquets will be held at the Daytona 500 Club inside DIS.
In what has become a holiday karting tradition, teams have traveled throughout the United States with goals of taking home a KartWeek 2008 championship trophy.
