WKA Kart Races Open at Daytona International Speedway

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (12-26-96) -- More than 250 kart racers, including NASCAR Winston Cup technical inspector Steve Peterson (see Senior Champ Kart results) and Bobby Waltrip, the brother of former Daytona 500 winner Darrell Waltrip, competed Thursday in the opening day of the World Karting Association's Enduro World Championships road races at Daytona International Speedway. Kerry Parnell of Kernersville, N.C., won a pair of races -- Super Stock and Stock Medium. Other event winners included: Lawrence Sampson of Tampa, Fla., Limited Modified Medium; Robert Burkett Sr. of Middletown, Pa., Senior Champ Kart; Matt Estep of South Holland, Ill., Amateur Medium; Michael Rogers of Jacksonville, Fla., and Kyle McClenathen of Akron, Ohio, Restricted Junior; Chris Gordon of Kannapolis, N.C., Stock Heavy; Chris Shearburn of Springfield, Ill., Stock Lite; Jimmy Griffin Jr. of Cornelius, N.C., Stock Super Heavy; and Douglas Crew of South Boston, Va., Senior Stock. Action continues today at the Speedway with practice from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Infield admission is $8. Practice for the WKA Dirt World Championship races at Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium begins at 9 a.m., qualifying is at 1 p.m., qualifying races at 4 p.m. and opening ceremonies and main events at 6 p.m. General admission is $8.
