"Bittersweet weekend for FirstKart.com race team"
Guelph, ON. -- March 22, 2005 -- After a wet and cold weekend, the FirstKart.com race team managed to come home with two podium results from the opening round of the Stars of Karting Championship. Reaching the podium was Idaho's Brett Smrz in the JICA class and Ontario's Eric Gerrits in the Spec Racer division.
After claiming a victory in his heat race, Brett Smrz would start the final from outside row one. The talented youngster had a great start through the first half lap but was pushed wide in the infield section and was able to settle back in line in P7. Smrz worked forward through the field and eventually took the checkers and claimed the final podium position. Mitchell Egner and Max Riddle were able to come home in 12th and 27th respectively.
A trio of First Kart drivers took to the track in the Spec Racer class and after qualifying, First Kart drivers held three of the top five positions. Gerrits had a great heat race with fellow First kart driver Devon Sandeen as the duo was able to finish 1-2 and start the final on the front row. Pace lap trouble took Sandeen out of contention for the win as the British Columbia resident was forced to start from the pits but came forward to finish 11th. Nicholas Fairney had a consistent race weekend and brought his ride home in P5 just behind Ontario's Eric Gerrits who finished 3rd. All three drivers in the Spec Racer class were utilizing the First Kart / CFR Parilla package.
A total of six First Kart drivers were in attendance and battling for the win in the headline ICC division but a first corner incident took several of them out of contention. Coming home 9th was Daniel Morad who exited the first corner melee back in 34th position. The youngster used bold moves in wet weather action to progressively move forward. Ontario's Matt Pritiko came home 13th just head of '03 ICC national champion Bobby Wilson who was 16th. Zach Schiff fell victim to the first corner pile up and was unable to get his machine restarted and was classified 35th.
FirstKart.com's other ICC competitors were Floridian Chris Friel and Alberta's Nick Maddison. Both drivers ran into some bad luck during their respective heat races and were unable to finish the event. Both Maddison and Friel will be back in action for the next round of the Stars of Karting East championship in New Castle, IN.
2006 is going to be an exciting year for the team as First Kart North America will travel to all East and West coast events in the Stars of Karting Championship, the World Karting Association Manufactures Cup and the Florida Winter Tour. Arrive and Drive opportunities are available for any interested parties.
