Italian champion Parilla makes long trip for WKA title

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (12-29-96) -- Former karting world champion Stefano Parilla of Milan, Italy, made his second trip to Daytona for the World Karting Association Enduro World Championships a success Sunday as he won the 40-minute Open class race. Kart Week activities conclude Monday with six road race enduros beginning at 10:15 a.m. at the Speedway. Practice begins at 7:30 a.m. Infield admission is $8. At Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium, the WKA Dirt World Championships have five classes competing with practice beginning at 9 a.m., qualifying at 1 p.m., qualifying races at 4 p.m. and main events at 6 p.m. Sunday, Parilla was involved in a heated battle with DAP teammate Brian Thomas and Wil Leonard Jr. while the third DAP team member, Dave Bradley, led comfortably. When the other three combatants fell out of the race, Parilla won the hard-fought victory. Bradley, of Tulsa, Okla., a former Sports Car Club of America Formula Ford racer before signing a deal to drive for the DAP factory team, suffered a leaking fuel tank on his kart and ran out of fuel on the next-to-last lap after leading for more than 35 minutes. "Last year we had problems with the engine but this year we win, so that is nice," said Parilla. "In the beginning of the race I thought I could win, but then I wasn't sure until the very end." Parilla plans to compete in Monday's B Limited class enduro. In other events Sunday, in which more than 330 entries participated, Eric Oleson of Odessa, Fla., won a pair of Junior classes; Stephen Prater of Edgewater, Fla., ended a good weekend with his third top five finish, fourth, in Yamaha Sprint Lite; and Mark Weaverling of Santa Maria, Calif., won his second race in two days, Piston Port Heavy. The Yamaha Sprint Heavy enduro, the final event of the day, had the day's closest finish with four karts finshing within two kart lengths of each other. Andy Kiker of Egg Harbor City, N.J., beat Gene Green of Casselberry, Fla. Green earlier won the Yamaha Sprint Lite Enduro.
