Bassingham karting star Jack Harvey failed to finish in the final of the Midlands Championships at the Rissington circuit this weekend (September 4/5). However, the Allens Group backed youngster is aiming for glory at the next round of the MSA Super One Championship at Larkhall in Scotland next weekend (September 11/12).

A series of superb Heat results meant that Harvey -- now a pupil at the Minster School in Lincoln -- started the final from fourth on the grid. The field was littered with local club racers who had a slight advantage with circuit knowledge.

A fired up Harvey knew that an early charge was going to be needed to stay with the local racers and he went for the lead on the opening lap, trying to get a break away at the front. But, as he dived up the inside of the front three on one corner he made hard contact with one of the kerbs and it flicked the chain off the axle, ending his race on the spot.

"The local specialists were very, very quick," said Jack. "I had to run all of the best equipment we have to keep on terms with them and knew that I had to make a break early to stay up there. Some of them were about half a second a lap faster;

"I was on a mission when I got to the corner and just made too much contact with the kerb and it was too much for the chain to take," he added.

The recent open meetings have sharpened up Jack's racing and skills and he is now determined to climb onto the top step of the podium before the end of the season, starting at the Super One event at Larkhall in Scotland next weekend.

Although he can no longer lift the title in 2004, he knows that a win there might still allow him to finish third in the points at the end of the season and he is determined to show his mettle next weekend.

"I going to be going for glory next weekend," he said. "If I take the race win in the final and some of the other guys in the series have a poor meeting then it can help me take third in the series. I'll definitely be trying for it," he added.
