Veteran Karter prepares for the Stars of Karting ICA Championship
LONATO, Italy -- C-G Racing driver Steve Welk completed a two day test with the Merlin Racing Karts factory last weekend at the famed South Garda Karting circuit in Lonato, Italy. The Lonato test kicks of Welk's first full time Karting program since 2001 when he competed on the SKUSA Pro Moto Tour. Welk, who spearheaded the C-G Racing ICA program in 2004, will return to the Franklin, Wis based squad aboard the Merlin Racing Kart.
The test, in preparation for the upcoming Stars of Karting Championship, took place on March 1 and 2 in temperatures that hovered around zero degrees Celsius. Welk, who was under the guidance of Merlin owner Umberto Merlin, completed around 150 to 200 laps over the two days. The duo worked on various setup combinations on both the Merlin MR 32 and MR 30 chassis. The 2004 Stars of Karting podium finisher also worked with the ATK engine that is also built by the Merlin Factory.
"I am fully committed to the Stars of Karting Championship this year which is why I wanted test with the Merlin Factory over the winter break." Welk said about the test. "I think we accomplished a lot over the two days. It was very cold but we were able to get a lot of useful data about the karts and the engines."
Welk, who will return as the lead ICA driver for C-G Racing and Merlin Racing Chassis, is extremely excited about the upcoming season.
"I think that we have a good chance at running up front when we get to Norman for the first race. I have been preparing for this season since the start of the New Year. I am prepared both physically and mentally and can't wait to race. I know I have great support from C-G Racing / Franklin Motorsports as well as the Merlin factory which for sure adds to my confidence. I want to do nothing but good things for all the people who are supporting me this year. I really want o thank Jamie and George Sieracki for the opportunity to race for there C-G Racing / Dreamworks banner again this year."
The Snap-On Stars of Karting Championship presented by the IRL begins this weekend, March 11 to 13, at the Oklahoma Motorsports Complex in Norman, Okla.
