Vincec tries for three
September 11, 2007 - Stouffville, Ontario Three-for-three is the goal and this weekend, in the final round of the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship, sixteen year old Mike Vincec is hoping to put a cap on a very rewarding season. Mike currently leads in points in three classes, putting his Cameron Motorsports CRG karts on the podium in every event so far this season. The series wraps this weekend, August 14-16 at Goodwood Kartways near Stouffville, Ontario, a track where Mike is very much at home.
Having already clinched the Rotax DD2 championship based on four wins and one second place over five races, Mike looks to finish off the series with strong outings in Formula Senior (ICC) and Rotax Senior. With an 84-point lead in ICC, Mike needs only a top-four finish to lock up the championship. This would also give him back-to-back championships, the first driver to do so in this class since the series' inception. Mike has been on the podium for all five races so far with four wins and one second-place to his credit. To win Senior Rotax though, is a tall order.
The deepest field in the series, there are any number of drivers who can take the win. A forty-kart starting grid can also make it interesting if you have to fight your way from the back. Such was the case during the last round when an on-track incident with another driver during the pre-final would have Mike starting P20. He would fight his way back to second place in the twenty-five lap final for his third podium over five races. But that was on a fast, open track. At Goodwood, a track where passing is an art, starting position is very important and Mike will be looking to be as far up the grid as possible for the final. Despite two hiccups (including a DNS at Hamilton), Mike's chances for the championship are quite good. "In the races where we did not podium, there has been a mix of drivers at the front to spread the points around" noted Mike. "A good result, coupled with some good luck should bring us the championship in Rotax."
To win all three championships would offer a bit of redemption to Vincec who was shut out at the recent ASN Canadian Nationals. A bid to repeat as the Formula Senior champion was thwarted after dominating every on-track session by the rain during the finals. Mike would however have a good race in Rotax Senior and secure a spot on the Canadian National Team to compete in the 8th ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE GRAND FINALS. The Grand Finals take place in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates, November 26 through December 1, 2007.
Before heading to Goodwood, Mike and the Cameron Motorsports crew headed to Rock Island, Illinois for the annual Rock Island Grand Prix for the King of The Streets event. Mike would place sixth in the feature race and come back to finish P4 in the ICC (Intercontinental C) event.
The Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship wraps up this weekend at Goodwood Kartways, Stouffville, Ontario starting with practice on Friday (14th) and races starting at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
