Hottest circuit in Midwest karting set to visit TNT Kartway this weekend
ST. LOUIS, MO (July 17, 2008) -- The most exciting circuit in Midwest karting will return to the track this weekend at the Superkarts! USA Central States Challenge is primed for the third round of its seven-race schedule, heading to Quincy, Illinois and the legendary TNT Kartway for a Saturday-Sunday event that will feature qualifying, a Prefinal and a Final for all the marbles. Aside for the continuing races in the overall point championship, series organizers are also excited about the buzz being created by the newest addition to the program's qualifying format.
The Central States Challenge debuted an exciting new program at the second round of the series: SuperLap qualifying. This 45-minute open session is positioned immediately following regular qualifying and provides the opportunity for any driver in any class can throw away their qualifying time and take a single kart - single lap qualifying run to determine their starting position. The series offers up a 'Pole Theft' award for anyone stealing the pole position during their SuperLap run. Once the 45-minute gun goes off, no additional attempts will be allowed. At the last race of the series, the program was a huge success as the organizers had to turn away drivers. This weekend, the excitement will return in a big way.
The point races have now begun with the first two events in the books. Derek Crockett currently leads the way in the S1 category, heading Joe Sturm by just 50 points. In the S3 class, Round #1 winner Rick Freund leads Adam Lyon by 60 markers and will be looking to extend his lead at TNT. The TaG Senior class drew a strong contingent at 61 Kartway for Round #2 and racewinner Tony Neilson sits second in points to Crockett, who won the opener. Neilson missed the opening round, which has given Crockett a sizable advantage heading into the third stop on the series schedule. Greg Watters leads the TaG Masters class thanks to consistency with a pair of top-fives, while Natalie Feraroli and Kaylee Granberg are tied atop the TaG Junior standings with 343 points each. Granberg is also tied for the lead in the S5 class with Joe Reed, but the turnout has been light thus far as the program continues to develop. Cole Hannah (TaG 60 Expert), Zach Bohmer (TaG 60 Novice), Grant Sandberg (Yamaha Rookie), Drake Ostrum (Yamaha Junior), Sheree Kulp (Powder Puff) and Owen Leatherberry (Kid Kart) all lead their respective divisional races.
The event will begin with official practice on Saturday morning (July 19) at 9:00 am, running until 4:00 pm. Qualifying will be on-track from 4:30 -- 6:00 pm with SuperLap Qualifying beginning at 6:15 pm. Morning engine break-in begin Sunday's action at 8:00 am, with the Prefinals set to start at 9:00 am and the Finals running from 11:00 am -- 2:00 pm, allowing plenty of travel time for all to return home safely.
At the conclusion of the event on Sunday, SCSC will be handing out special raffle prizes during the podium ceremonies, including Mother's Polish Products, MG tires, a free entry for round three, t-shirts, and more. Along with the prizes being handed out during the weekend, the series will be over a 'special diehard entry fee' for anyone traveling 400 miles or more (one-way) with their first entry coming at half-price.
As with most SKUSA regions, an outstanding prize package will be offered at the end of the year, including an all-expense paid trip to compete at the Granja Viana 500 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, racing alongside Formula 1 and IRL superstars courtesy of MG Tires Brazil. The trip includes airfare, hotel, transportation, and all race expenses -- a $10,000 value.
The series website is currently in a rebuilding stage, although the former website is still available with all the series information at www.thecsss.com
