Several young riders and defending state champions won in more than one class as the Pennsylvania Dirt Karters Association state championship series opened Saturday at the Path Valley Speedway Park.

The three practice sessions and all of the time trials were completed Saturday and then morning rain forced curtailment of the feature races Sunday afternoon. The finish orders were then based on the time trial results for both the PDKA state championship series points and the Burris National Speedway Series (BNSS) national standings.

"Everyone enjoyed the full day of racing Saturday and the extra practice session and everyone got their plaques, payouts and $100 certificates from class sponsors," said PDKA President Butch Diller, "so they were disappointed with the weather but pleased with the season's first race."

The best five finishes of the six-race state championship series count toward the state titles. The series is sponsored by Burris Tires and races also count toward the BNSS year-end standings.

The six-race series alternates between Path Valley and the Selinsgrove Raceway and the remaining events are all Sunday races. Gates open at 7 a.m. with practice at 10 a.m. and racing at noon for the five remaining events.

The second race of the series is at Selinsgrove on May 19 and the additional Selinsgrove races are July 14 and Sept. 29. The third and fifth races at Path Valley are June 23 and August 18. Rain dates are Sept. 22 and Oct. 6.

Class Sponsors for the first of the six races were: JJ's Auto Body -- Kid Karts; Trim's Automotive/T-E Motorsports - Jr. Sportsman Champ; Ensor's Speed Shop - Jr. III Lite and Jr. Sportsman I Lite; Selinsgrove Raceway Park - Controlled Heavy; Silver Springs Speedway -- Jr. Sportsman II Lite and X-Heavy; Miller Racing -- Star Champ; In Memory of Kevin Gobrecht -- Yamaha 2-Cycle Lite; Kirby's Speed Secrets -- Sr. Medium; Frank Sears Sanitation -- Jr. Champ; Path Valley Speedway -- Jr. Sportsman II Heavy; Burris Racing -- F-200; JC Specialty -- Sr. Heavy; Awards and Beyond -- Jr. Sportsman I Heavy; Paul E. Power -- Junior; Locke's Auto/Viper Engines -- Controlled Medium; Little's Kart Shop -- Yamaha 2-Cycle Heavy; Quality Cleaning -- Sr. Champ; York County Kart Supply -- Sr. Lite.

New classes this year are Briggs Junior Sportsman Champ, Star Champ, Briggs Junior Sportsman 1 Lite & Heavy, Briggs Junior Sportsman 2 Lite & Heavy, F-200 Intek/ Honda/ Kohler/ Tecumseh @ 360#'s. For F-200 Rules click the Info & Rules section of the BNSS web site at www.burrisnationalspeedwayseries.com/. None of the new F-200 class were at Path Valley. Burris M15A or M15B tires are required for all classes.

The PDKA competitors range from Kid Karts for those 5 to 7 years old up to adult classes for those 15 and older like the Yamaha 2-Cycle class that produced 2001 state and national champion Chris Meleason. Riders can compete in more than one class within their age group by adding weight or riding a different kart.

Diller noted that to make the state titles legitimate and respectable an extensive technical inspection program is enforced. All of those competing Saturday who finished in the top five were required to return Sunday for technical inspections. The winning karts' engines are completely torn down and thoroughly examined, fuel is checked, and each chassis is checked.
