2011 Gold Cup schedule features a little bit of old and new

10.20.2010 - When March of 2011 hits for the Russell Karting Gold Cup Series, many competitors will be looking to dig out of the winter doldrums, not to mention snow banks, and point their rigs toward an old friend - sunny Jacksonville, Florida. While it's been three years since the last Gold Cup event at 103rd Street Sports Complex, home of the North Florida Kart Club, improvements have continued to enhance the facility.

This past season the facility received a major facelift in the form of a resurfaced sprint track. Adding to that a remodeled scoring tower and brand-new tech and scale buildings, and the folks from the NFKC have quite a bit to be proud of.

Additionally, the emergence of the Clone program has been a saving grace to the club, as clones have become quite popular in the South, running at 103rd Street, Barnesville, Ga., and Kershaw, S.C. WKA officials have carefully dabbled in the Clone project recently, incorporating them as local-option classes on Gold Cup and the Speedway Dirt Series programs in 2010.

This year, World Karting has announced that Clone classes will take the next step and become nationally recognized points classes. Classes for Pure Stock Senior and Junior will be added in Gold Cup with more details on class specs coming shortly. The popularity of the motor in the Midwest helps to further enhance WKA's national schedule.

A Fourth of July weekend return to the fabled G&J Kartway in Camden, Ohio, an August stop at New Castle Motorsports Park in Indiana, and the season finale, the Grand National at BeaveRun (Pa.) Motorsports Complex in late September, early October, round out the schedule for the only 4-cycle sprint series in North America.

In the next week or so, final specs will be laid out for all classes, as well as the race order, which will continue to include the ever popular Animal Heavy Money Race on Friday night, providing the perfect start to each racing weekend.
