P1 ENGINES TAKES WINS AND CHAMPIONSHIPS AT WKA AND IKF EVENTS ON SAME
"P1 Engines momentum continues at national events"
May 5, 2010 -- With events taking place on both coasts of the United States this past weekend, P1 Engines and Jesus Vasquez had another terrific outing scoring race wins and championships at both the World Karting Association (WKA) Manufacturer's Cup and International Karting Federation (IKF) Region 7 programs. Supporting customers at the WKA event in South Bend, Indiana, Vasquez would be burning up the phone lines providing support and advice to customers competing in IKF action.
With the WKA event taking place at Michiana Raceway Park in South Bend, Indiana, P1 Engines scored one win, five second place results, two pole positions and a total of seven podium results.
Californian Zane Smith would score the pole position in the KPV 1 class and run near the front of the field all day long. Looking to score the victory, Smith and a fellow competitor made contact in the last corner on the last lap to take him out of the event. Fellow Californian pilot Raquel Martinez had a good weekend as she battled with some of the nation's best junior drivers scoring two top five results. The Yamaha Junior Heavy class would provide the up and coming female pilot with her best weekend finish in second while in KPV Junior Lite she managed to score a fifth place finish. With more than forty competitors in each of the junior classes, scoring a podium result is a feat in itself.
Leading the way in the junior ranks was New Jersey resident Shawn Sharkey. The talented junior had his best weekend of national competition as he scored the runner up position in KPV Junior Heavy, KPV Junior Lite and Yamaha Junior Lite classes. With a host of race winners and national champions in attendance, Sharkey used his P1 power to driver forward and stay at the front of the pack to score a triple podium weekend.
TaG competitor and Indiana resident Kyle Wiegand came up two laps short of claiming the TaG Senior win after qualifying deep in the field. After using the prefinal to move forward, Wiegand led the main event setting the fastest lap of the race but would come home in the second position. Looking to improve on his TaG result in the TaG Leopard class, Wiegand swept the day's action scoring the pole position, heat race win and main event victory.
"It is challenging to hit a new track and get the carburetor tuning and gearing down in four short practice sessions on Friday," expressed Jesus Vasquez. "I am looking forward to the next few rounds and getting back to some repeat tracks with the hopes of several more race wins."
Across the country were the West coast competitors at the final round of the IKF Region 7 program. With several P1 Engines drivers in action, results would be plentiful with one win and four series championships.
Leading the way in on track results this past weekend was Jesse Huaman as he qualified in the third position and progressively moved forward throughout the day. Huaman would take the top honors in the PRD Junior class to claim his first career IKF victory.
Canadian pilot Parker Thompson raced a smart and clean weekend with multiple championships on the line. Though the up and comer did not come home with any wins, Thompson was able to garner the KPV 1 and Comer Cadet titles while finishing third in the Rookie Sportsman championship chase. Maya Gutierrez followed Thompson with a championship claiming the Spec PRD title giving P1 Engines its second championship in the past two season while Bradley Espinoza claimed the new Yamaha Pipe Championship.
