ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (November 18, 2003) -Cape Motorsports has announced that the reigning World Karting Champion, Wade Cunningham, will test with the team in a Formula Ford Zetec Championship car.
Cunningham, of Auckland, New Zealand, will test with Cape Motorsports at Roebling Road in Savannah, Ga., as part of the Zetec Championship series-sanctioned test, November 24-26, 2003.
Cunningham won the 2003 World Karting Championship earlier this year in Sarno, Italy. Racing for the Italian based CRG factory team, the 19 year-old beat the world's best karters, including the European Karting Champion Bas Lammers and the defending World Champion, Vitantonio Liuzzi, who this past year raced in the FIA Formula 3000 Championship. In his second year of competition with CRG, Cunningham came to prominence in 2001, when he won the Asia-Pacific Intercontinental A title in Suzuka, Japan, becoming the first driver from New Zealand to win a CIK/FIA event.
Founded in 1988, Cape Motorsports is one of the premier teams in the Zetec Championship. Over the past five years, the Florida based team has won two Zetec Championships, one Oval Crown Championship, a series-high 24 races, captured a series-high 35 pole positions and been named Team of the Year three times. Running a three-car team, Cape Motorsports works out of a state-of the art workshop in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Widely regarded as North America's premier open-wheel training series, the Formula Ford Zetec Championship, part of the Cooper Tires Championship Series, offers a complete motorsports education, with emphasis on cost-effective racing. All the Zetec Championship cars are powered by the technically advanced 2.0-liter Ford Focus power plant and run on spec Cooper Zeon UHP tires. The 2004 schedule will be announced shortly and will feature 15 races on North America's premier race tracks.
