Baltzer lands Cape Motorsports ride for Formula Ford 2000 season finale.
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (October 22, 2002) -- Cape Motorsports announced today that Craig Baltzer, of Bettendorf, Iowa, will campaign a third entry for the team this weekend at Virginia International Raceway in the Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship doubleheader finale.
Baltzer's performance this year in both the SCCA Pro Racing/WKA Constructors Championship, where he currently leads the ICC championship, and the Skip Barber Formula Dodge National Championship presented by RACER, a ride he received for winning a Skip Barber Karting Scholarship last year, caught the eye of Cape Motorsports team owner Dominic Cape.
"Bryan Sellers rates Craig very highly, having been his teammate previously in karting," said Cape. "We thought this would be a good opportunity to see what he can do in one of our cars."
For Baltzer, the opportunity to race this weekend was rather unexpected.
"I got a call Monday morning asking me if I'd like to be the teammate to Bryan [Sellers] and Ross [Fonferko] this weekend," said Baltzer. "I'm obviously very excited about the opportunity to drive for one of the top teams in the series.
"The car is more advanced than anything I have driven before and I've never been to VIR so the test day will be very important."
In addition to the Cape Motorsports ride this weekend, Baltzer is in the running for a Formula Ford test with Primus Racing, as part of the Driver Scholarship Program rewarding the top-three ICC and ICA finishers in the Constructors Championship.
"It is great to see a driver in the Constructors Championship get this opportunity," said John Baytos, Formula Ford 2000 Series Director. "It really validates what Primus Racing is trying to do by giving young drivers the opportunity to take the next step in their career."
The 2002 Constructors Championship season comes to a close November 1-3 at Lowe's Motor Speedway, in Charlotte, NC.
