Another Fittipaldi is making headlines, Pietro's brother Enzo will be heading to the Karting World Finals after a great race this weekend in Mooresville.
As if the news out of Brands Hatch last weekend when Pietro Fittipaldi took the checkered flag at the storied track wasn't enough, his younger brother, Enzo is making headlines himself.
Racing on a shoestring budget, Gugu Fittipaldi, Enzo's father, purchased his son a kart to take part in the Go Kart Grand Nationals in Mooresville, NC, in the Mini Max Class.
"Enzo kept insisting that he also wanted to go practicing with his brother and we finally got him a used kart that I paid 500 dollars for," said Gugu.
While Gugu was in the United Kingdom with Pietro, a family friend was reporting about Enzo's performance during his first appearances in the kart, and the races leading up to the Grand Nationals.
"A good friend of mine that watched Enzo racing brought to my attention that the kid was doing very well and that he might have a good chance to get a ticket to the World Finals," he said.
In the racing leading up to the finals on Saturday, Enzo won his heat and qualified on the pole for the main event.
Other drivers protested the young drivers performance, and in the interest of fair competition the Fittipaldi team submitted the engine for examination by officials.
The engine was given back to the team after the teardown in a cardboard box with only three hours to spare before the final race.
Enzo started the race on pole and led 15 laps, but started losing power towards the end and was passed on the last lap, relegating the young driver to second overall.
"As a little champion Enzo got out of his car with a big smile on his face, walked to the winner to shake hands and to congratulate him and at that moment I had no more words. He looked at me over the fence waved and said "Dad we are going to the World Finals.""
