Winning weekend at Winton for Eastern Creek Karts
22 September, 2003 - The Eastern Creek Karts team dominated proceedings at the seventh round PROCAR Champ Series held at Winton Motor Raceway in country Victoria last weekend.
Leading the charge for the team was Garry Holt aboard his Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VII in the Australian GT Performance Championship. Garry's qualifying performance set the scene for the weekend ahead when he set the fastest qualifying time.
Starting from pole Garry then went on to win the opening race before going on to also take out the second 10-lap race, in which he also set the fastest lap of the race.
At the start of the third race he was taken out by a fellow competitor. After coming back onto the circuit dead last Garry charged through the ever-competitive field to finish in tenth position at the finish. These results enabled Garry to claim the round victory.
This victory makes the third straight round that Garry has stood on the podium. It is also the fourth time from five rounds on the podium for Garry since Nigel Bolling and Rob Derbyshire have been preparing the Eastern Creek Karts/2UE Evo VII.
"The car was nothing short of perfect all weekend and I am now third in the Championship. If it wasn't for some tyre dramas at Queensland I'm sure I would have been battling for the Championship lead," says Garry.
"When you also consider I missed the opening round of the Championship and had never driven the car prior to round two it is an unbelievable effort to currently be third in the Championship."
With only one round in the Championship remaining the team are focusing on the two most prestigious events on the calendar, the Indy carnival and the non-Championship Bathurst 24-hour event.
The second of the Eastern Creek Karts/2UE drivers Troy Hunt continued his domination of the Falken Tyres Mitsubishi Cup setting the fastest qualifying time and then went on to take the victory in all 3 of the 9-lap races to seal the Championship.
"I am ecstatic to be able to win the Championship, especially after missing the opening round when I thought it was all over for me," said Troy after his final race. "Although I have been the driver it has been a huge team effort to win this Championship without the help of Garry, Nigel and Rob I wouldn't be standing here right now."
This team effort that Troy refers to not only consists of the drivers and engineers at the races but to also the corporate partners of the Eastern Creek Karts team which include Radio 2UE, Elf, Sonax, Jack Hillermans Smash Repairs and Signage Supermarket.
Garry Holt will next compete aboard the Eastern Creek Karts/2UE Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII on October 23-26 at the Lexmark Indy 300 carnival on the Gold Coast.
