Joliet Memorial Stadium saw action on Sunday, July 23, as Kart Racing returned for the 4th Annual Burris Twin 50’s. In addition to a full slate of racing action, the Briggs Light and Briggs Heavy classes ran special 50 lap races. The feature became an all Wisconsin show with Lake Geneva’s, David Byrne and Delavan’s Joe Moser running neck and neck for the last 30 laps. With the lead changing several times each lap during the final five laps, handling and fatigue was the name of the game. David Byrne held off a last corner passing attempt and finished first, with Moser just inches behind. The final results were Byrne, Moser, Jon Hassler, Mike Slabenak and Richard Strle taking first through fifth respectively.

The final race of the day, the Light Class, was every bit as exciting as the rest of the day. River Grove’s Paul Weter and Reid Ceponis raced side by side for most of the race. These evenly matched racers made the most of the ¼ mile oval at the Stadium. After changing the lead every 10 laps, Weter and Yorkville’s Josh Stahl were dueling for second place and Ceponis pulled away. Results for the top finishers were Ceponis, Weter, Hank Sievers, Jr., Bobby Atkinson and Jackie Hagen.

In other action, the Briggs Medium drivers gave the grandstand crowd a great show. On the 13th lap of the 15 lap feature, veteran drivers David Byrne, Mark Johnson, Reid Ceponis and Josh Stahl were going four wide down the front stretch. By the time the group took the checker is was a four kart train with Ceponis in front followed by Byrne, Johnson and Stahl. Coming into turn four and heading toward the checkered flag, Ceponis tried to protect the inside, giving Byrne a very small opening. Ceponis drifted out and Byrne and Johson slipped into the lead. The official results at the finish was Byrne, Johnson, Ceponis and Stahl.

The next stop for the Burris Circle Tour is August 6th at Lake Geneva Raceway. Pits open at 8:00 am, practice at 10:00 am and racing at 11:00 am. The Junior Class will be the featured class in the 2nd Annual Gold Runner. Special events are planned such as a trophy dash and a 25 lap feature. Racing returns to Joliet Stadium on August 20th for the 5th Annual Purple Shootout. Novice drivers from all over the Midwest are expected to come and join in the fun.
