Luke has Wood on them in Day one

20 September, 2003 - Newcastle KartWorks driver Luke Wood upstaged his more fancied rivals today to set the fastest qualifying time at the fifth round of the Ford KartStars at South Australia's Bolivar Raceway presented by Shell Helix Racing.

Wood, 18, set a time of 35.242 second circulation to become the fifth different pole sitter in the 2003 Series. Taz Douglas timed second less a tenth behind Wood narrowly ahead of Peter McNiven and the next four drivers covered by less than a tenth of second.

During the opening heat Wood led the way while made a great start from his 7th starting position to be second during the opening circulation closely followed by Jack Perkins. At the same time Championship contender, Troy Woolston was involved in an opening lap incident that dropped him to almost the rear of the field.

While Wood was strong out in front to record his first KartStars heat win Estasy fell into the hands of Douglas who came through to claim second. Local driver Reif Corbett who was fastest in this morning's opening practice session seized an engine on the eighth lap. Ben Guest drove a good race to finish fourth and also the fastest lap of the race.

Estasy got the jump in the second heat ahead of Wood as Championship contender; Andrew Thompson was battling with overheating problems in his Fuchs Silkolene machine. "I seem to loose bottom end and for some reason the engine was overheating even in the form up laps," said Thompson.

With a handful of laps remaining Wood made the pass for the lead to which he held on for his second win of the day. Estasy was second ahead of Douglas. Woolston put in a good drive in his CC Racing kart passing 12 karts to finish 9th.

"It was a good race but I also stuffed it up a bit when I forgot to take the tape of the radiator and it got too hot. The only reason I made the pass for the lead was to try and cool the engine down," commented Wood after the race. "I only wish we could have started this way five rounds ago."

While Woolston is firmly focused on what he needs to do to win the Championship Douglas commented "She's going good, I have the pace to take it to the guys in front of me."

The racing continues tomorrow with the third heat race and Pre-Final with the Final to be held at 3:00pm tomorrow afternoon.

All Ford KartStars drivers use identical Australian made Arrow chassis on Bridgestone YGK tyres powered by Rotax FR125 Max engines using Shell Optimax fuel.

Bolivar Raceway is located on Summer Road, BOLIVAR (just off Port Wakefield Road) and is approximately 20 minutes north of Adelaide.
