Thompson takes the jewel in the crown
23 September, 2003 - Byron Bay driver, Andrew Thompson last weekend became the youngest winner of the Ford KartStars Series with another calculated and maturing weekend of racing at Adelaide's Bolivar Raceway.
Entering the round with a victory and three second place finishes the 15-year-old sensation was in the box seat to take the Championship but with the ability to drop the worst result of the year Victorian, Troy Woolston was still mathematically able to steal the Championship from Thompson's grasp.
It became a two way battle from the start of the weekend with the pair never far apart. However it was Andrew's ever maturing attitude and natural talent that got him over the line for the victory in the Series.
While battling with an overheating engine on the opening day Andrew maintained his composure to be inside the top 10 during qualifying then on to a sixth place finish in the opening heat followed by two fourth's in the remaining heats. However he was fully aware that the job was not completed just yet.
"During these heat races I planned to stay out of trouble and apply pressure to Troy and hope that he made a mistake, with him having a DNF in the final heat in now puts me in an easier position for the win in the Series," said Thompson after the heat races. "It's still a long way to go though but I am only racing one driver out there now and he will start from 18 while I start from 4th."
Andrew was very fast during the opening laps of the Pre-Final closing in on the leaders to be battling for a top 3 finish. It was his mature attitude towards the Series victory that was evident however by just being content to hold his own rather than make any lunges for the lead. He eventually finished fifth while Woolston was 12th.
The point difference after the Pre-Final meant that the Series was all but over with Andrew only having to face the starter to take the honours.
After dropping just outside the top 5 during the opening laps Andrew was hotly pursued by Woolston for the first half of the race with the pair dicing for 6th and seventh position. At mid race distance the pair had a coming together that resulted in Andrew being sent into the sand trap at high speed and was out of the race. However the consolation was that the Championship was still his for the taking.
"It's not quite the way I would have liked to have finished the Series anyway I have achieved my goal for the year," smiled Andrew at the completion of racing.
Andrew will now be a part of the testing and evaluation for the two Formula Ford drives up for grabs courtesy of the Ford KartStars Series before he begins to plan his destiny for 2004 and beyond.
