Richmond, VA (Sept. 7, 2004) -- The weather cooperated Wednesday afternoon in the Richmond, VA area allowing the Crown Royal International Race of Champions a final afternoon practice session. Drivers participating in the final sessions were World of Outlaws champion Danny Lasoski; IRL IndyCar-Series drivers, Scott Dixon and Scott Sharp; NASCAR Nextel Cup drivers, Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman and Matt Kenseth, and NASCAR Craftsman Truck champion, Travis Kvapil.
The 90-lap All-star event kicks off Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. EST, live on Speed Channel.
Matt Kenseth: Representing NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series
"The IROC cars have a real solid feel and will be fun to drive tomorrow night. The cars drive a lot different than the (NASCAR) Cup cars. They (IROC cars) have a heavier feel and there's a noticeable power difference, but when you let off the gas they keep going, so you have to let off the gas a lot sooner than what we're used to -- definitely a very different feel to it."
Travis Kvapil: Representing NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series
"I think they feel really cool. This afternoon is my first time at Richmond in an IROC car and it is a lot different than what I used to in the Truck series here. It takes a few laps to get used to it -- a lot better brakes, a little less motor. The cars are driving great so Dave (Marcis), Jim and Jay (Sauter) did a great job getting them tuned up."
Ryan Newman: Representing NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series
"I think the cars are pretty good. The practice cars feel very consistent. They (IROC cars) do change throughout the run, which I expected. I think Richmond is going to prove out to be very conducive to IROC racing with multiple grooves to run in, definitely two grooves, at least in the corners where we'll be able to race."
Kevin Harvick: Representing NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series
"The IROC cars are a lot different. I was really charging the corners and Jay Sauter came over and said, 'that's not right,' so I'm making adjustments to the way I drive the (IROC) cars because they're not like anything else I drive here. Once I got acclimated to the way I should be driving into the corners, it picked right up-it should be a lot of fun."
Scott Dixon: Representing IRL IndyCar-Series
"I'm getting a little better. It's good to get back here today after having a night to think about it. I think consistency was the biggest problem yesterday and at least today I'm getting consistent times, which is good. Hopefully, the weather will allow us a few more runs, but I'm definitely happier today then I was yesterday."
Scott Sharp: Representing IRL IndyCar-Series
"I'm certainly getting a feel for where I need to be and what to be doing there on the race track. Again, Dave Marcis, Jay and Jim Sauter continue to be very helpful, but like I said yesterday, it's laps -- just getting more and more laps. I feel like I figuring out when the car is starting to do something and how to adjust to it."
