Talladega, AL - With a history of success on ultra-fast oval tracks that is highlighted by his 1998 Indy 500 victory at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Eddie Cheever Jr. is no stranger to superspeedways. This weekend, Cheever, a standout in the top open-wheel categories of Formula One and Indy Racing, returns to one of NASCAR's most challenging circuits - Talladega Superspeedway - to compete in the second round of the 2000 International Race of Champions (IROC) Series.

"The Talladega track is like one big straightaway," comments Cheever, who pilots the #51 Excite@Home Indy Race Car in Indy Racing Northern Light Series competition and is ranked eleventh overall in the 2000 IROC standings.

"Talladega is very easy to drive by yourself, but very difficult to drive in a group," explains Cheever, who began his sophomore season of IROC competition with an eleventh place finish at Daytona in February. Based on his Daytona finish, Cheever will start from the outside of the front row at Talladega, next to fellow Indy Racing driver Mark Dismore on the pole.

"After the Daytona race, when I was running at the front until I got out of line, I told myself that I wasn't going to let myself lose the draft again," he recounts. "I'm going to try to exercise a little more restraint this time around at Talladega. I know one thing though: whether I finish last or I finish first, I'm going to have a great time, and it will be another heart-stopping spectacle for the fans."

The 38-lap IROC sprint is scheduled for 1:00pm Eastern on Saturday, April 15, with a tape-delayed broadcast of the event scheduled to air on ABC the following day at 5:00pm Eastern.

Primary Sponsorship of the #51 Indy Car comes from Excite@Home. The company is based in Redwood City, California, at the heart of Silicon Valley. Associate Sponsors of Team Cheever include Indy Promotional Products, Menards, Ceramiche Ragno, Infiniti, Firestone, Bosch and Pennzoil.
