True Value IROC - driver draw press conference.
Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003
Felipe Giaffone, IRL IndyCar Series: Starting 5th - Aqua
How he feels about his first True Value IROC competition: (First time in a North American stock car and first time at Daytona.)
"It's a completely different deal, I mean, the cars I used to drive in Brazil that are called a stock car, but only runs on road courses. My first time ever was yesterday. I really have to get used to it with all the movement. You think that the car is getting loose every time, but it is just moving around you know. We'll see, it is very close, and I'll make sure I polish my butt, because they're going to be touching it."
Greg Biffle, NASCAR Busch Series: Starting Last (12th) - Light Blue
Comments on first True Value IROC series:
"I'm really excited about running in IROC. I really glad I found some time to do some drafting practice. The cars are really fun to drive. I've only been out with four cars, but they seem like they handle really well. A couple of them sucked up really good, so I'm excited about getting out there with all (12) of them."
Mark Martin, NASCAR Winston Cup Starting 8th - Green
The four-time True Value IROC champion talks about returning and 2003 field:
"Well, I look around at the competitors here and I'm the only old man in the field, and I don't know if that's good or bad. I guess I'm going to have something to prove here when this thing gets going. So, we'll see how it goes, but it's been a while. I was real disappointed these last couple of years not being able to be a part of it. Its really great racing and I want to thank Jay (Signore), True Value, Goodyear and everybody who supports the program."
Kevin Harvick, NASCAR Winston Cup, (defending True Value IROC Champion) Starting 11th - Gold
About the 2003 season:
"Well, at least we've got Mark Martin out numbered with young guys, but somehow I think he'll overcome that. I just enjoy the heck our of running these IROC cars and meeting all the different competitors. They're (IROC cars) a lot of fun to drive with the roof flap and all the drag. You can get behind and catch back up, so it's a lot of fun."
How do you feel about being the IROC champion?
"Mark will probably tell you this, I once had a conversation with Mark Martin and he said, 'You know what . . . that last IROC championship I won, I earned by beating Dale Earnhardt, that's the one thing I'll remember the most about my racing career.' So, that tells you how special an IROC championship is."
Sam Hornish, IRL IndyRacing Series Starting 3rd - Purple
About the learning curve for the open-wheel drivers:
"The biggest thing about these cars is putting yourself in the right position on the last lap of the race. The open-wheel guys don't have to use the air off our cars to slow down the another car, so that's one of the things you learn in the IROC cars."
Steve Kinser, World of Outlaws Starting 1st - Black
About starting from the pole and returning to the series:
"I can't believe it! It's a lot different when you're out there practicing with these guys, then when you're racing with them, things have a tendency to be a little different. It's great to be invited back to this series. It's one of the best opportunities I've had, and I've run a lot of different race cars, but this is really great and a real honor to run IROC."
