England's Dan Wheldon is aiming for a hat-trick of race wins! He has won the last two races of the 2001 CART Dayton Indy Lights Championship at Gateway and Road Atlanta and is optimistic about his chances of taking a third successive victory this weekend around the 2.238-mile Laguna Seca Raceway road course at Monterey in California. At this meeting last year, in the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship, Dan Wheldon took pole position, led all 30 laps and won the race by 7.299 seconds.
In the first qualifying session for tomorrow's penultimate round of the Indy Lights series, Dan Wheldon set the fourth best time in his Gemstar Communications PacWest Racing Lola-Buick: 1 minute 17.085 seconds - an average speed of 104.518 mph - just .772 of a second more than current Championship leader Townsend Bell.
Dan Wheldon is currently second in the 2001 CART Dayton Indy Lights Championship with 123 points. He is also jointly leading the challenge to become Rookie of the Year - a title he has taken the last two years: in US Formula Ford 2000 (1999) and Toyota Atlantic (2000).
Earlier this week, Dan Wheldon was the only Indy Lights driver to be nominated for the prestigious Greg Moore Legacy Award which honours the Canadian driver who lost his life in the last Champ Car race of the 1999 season. 23-year old Wheldon - the youngest of five nominees - commented: 'I am very happy and, of course, honoured to be nominated for such an Award. I'd definitely like to follow in the footsteps of somebody such as Greg Moore. It would be an extreme privilege to win an award named in Greg's honour. It's an award I'd love to win and he's a person I'd love to emulate in Champ Car. Hopefully, I can finish off the last two races competitively and pick up the Award at the end of the season, finishing what has been a strong year for me.'
The final qualifying session for Sunday's eleventh round of the 2001 CART Dayton Indy Lights Championship takes place later today (Saturday).
