Cristiano da Matta Clinches PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship at Vancouver Molson Indy
Cristiano da Matta, #2 Medley/LCI Lola - Won Race
"I can't explain how I feel right now. My last championship was in 1994 in Brazilian Formula 3. This is a big relief. It feels wonderful and makes for a very happy day. I just can't explain how it feels. I was not expecting to take the championship today. I knew it would be hard to take the lead from us, but I thought we would claim it at Laguna. This is even better. Now I have only two races to go, and two races to have fun.
"I was really happy when I got the drive with Tasman this year. There was a lot of pressure because they had won three championships before, but I was confident the team could do it again because of their record. With all our forces together, I knew we were going to be very strong in the championship."
Airton Dare, #1 Banestado/LCI Lola - Finished 3rd
"Congratulations to Cristiano on the championship. It would have been better if I could have finished second so we could have been one-two on the podium today, but I am very happy for him and his guys.
"Derek (Higgins) was running pretty good. I had a lot of push on the restarts. The car was getting better and better as the tires were getting warmer. Maybe if we had more green time I could have given him a hard time."
Steve Horne, Team Owner:
"First of all, congratulations to everyone on the Tasman Motorsports team for another championship. That is four we have won now out of five years of competition and that is quite an achievement. Certainly congratulations to Cristiano. He did everything we asked of him all year. A very special thanks to Steve Dickson (team manager) and all the guys on the team, and especially Eric Cowdin (da Matta's engineer) who has developed into a tremendous engineer for us."
