DETROIT, MI., (June 18, 2000) -- Team KOOL Green's Jonny Kane won today's 32-lap race on Belle Isle from the pole for his second Indy Lights career victory. Kane's win comes one week after a big accident and recovery from an ankle injury in the last race at Milwaukee. He dominated this one, however, leading from the green flag to the checker. His teammate Jeff Simmons was less fortunate, starting and finishing ninth.

Kane had a three-second lead when the race was slowed for a caution after Jason Bright spun and hit the wall at Turn 12 after 12 laps. Kane had an excellent re-start and had pulled away another three seconds when the race was slowed again after 22 laps for Tony Renna, who appeared to have something break on the car. Kane again pulled away on the re-start and continued to dominate the remainder of the race.

Kane's margin of victory was 2.902 seconds over Felipe Giaffone in second, who was closely followed by Casey Mears in third and Scott Dixon in fourth. Kane also jumps from 9th in the standings to 3rd equal with Jason Bright on 32 points. Ahead of Kane are Casey Mears with 34 points and Scott Dixon with 54 points. Simmons, meanwhile, is second in the rookie points battle with 22 points only 10 behind Jason Bright with 32.

JONNY KANE, #27 Team KOOL Green Lola T97/20:
(Started 1st / Finished 1st ; Currently 3rd in the standings with 32 points)

"Team KOOL Green did an excellent job this weekend and got the result they deserved. Everything went perfect today from the very start. I was pulling away quite easily and I seemed very quick on the first couple of laps when everyone was on cold tires. The car reacted the same way every single lap throughout the race. It's wonderful when you have days like today.

"I was a little worried on the re-starts because Long Beach went through my mind a little bit. The first re-start was really, really good and I probably had a second of lead at the green flag. Both re-starts were just perfect."

JEFF SIMMONS, #26 Team KOOL Green Lola T97/20:
(Started 9th / Finished 9th ; Curretly 7th in the standings with 22 points)

"I was hoping that the first start would have green instead of yellow because I timed my run really well to get a couple of guys. Fortunately, I was able to do it again picking off [Luis] Diaz and [Chris] Menninga into the first turn. The KOOL car was not exactly the way I wanted. I was having trouble with the lower gears in the slower corners.

"I was only a couple of seconds behind [Jason] Bright when he went off. I didn't see him lose until I got up to the braking zone. I saw tires coming off the wall and him sliding around a bit. I saw the tires bouncing towards me and I had to cut around them causing me to spin. I did good to keep it off the wall. After that, I lost a ton of spots and dropped to 15th. I was able to pick up spots on the re-starts, but it was tougher and tougher to pass as we moved up the grid."
