SAM SCHMIDT MOTORSPORTS BUSY WITH POST-SEASON TESTING
INDIANAPOLIS - Sam Schmidt Motorsports, the 2010 Champion of Firestone Indy Lights, is certainly not resting on its laurels. The Indianapolis-based team tested two drivers at Sebring International Raceway.
Victor Carbone, 18, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, is the 2010 F2000 Champion who competed with Alegra Motorsports and accomplished six pole positions and six victories in 12 events. Rusty Mitchell, 27, of Midland, Texas, competed this season in the Star Mazda Series, finishing ninth in the points standings with 10 top-10s and two top-five finishes. Rusty has won championships in every major karting organization in North America and collected three SCCA Championships.
"Both drivers performed extremely well, progressing through a comprehensive testing plan from start to finish," said team manager Chris Griffis, who added that the conditions were less than favorable with a high of only 58 degrees.
"I'm very pleased with the overall performance of our teams and these two drivers, as all of our cars were clearly well prepared and our engineers worked very well with the talented pilots," team owner Sam Schmidt added. "Victor and Rusty demonstrated why they both had great results in their respective series in 2010, as they adapted very quickly to the higher horsepower Firestone Indy Lights cars and impressed us all with their driving and their feedback."
Victor Carbone: "Before the test I didn't know for sure what to expect as there is many different things from the F2000 cars I am used to. The first day I tried to get myself comfortable in the car, and adapt to what the car required of me. The second day I was able to work on smaller things as I was much more confident. Throughout the two days I enjoyed to watch my progress every time I got back to the car. It was fun in its own way. I had to get used to the weight and the differences in the braking zones, but it was fun. I am thankful to the whole team as I was able to learn a lot, and for the attention given to me."
Rusty Mitchell: "I thought the test with Sam Schmidt Motorsports went well. I was very impressed with the team and the car. I really enjoyed getting acclimated to the Indy Lights machine and look forward to further testing with them in January."
