BROOKLYN, Mich. (July 21) - - Sun, wind, clouds, and a misfire played havoc with Dorricott Racing's Jason Bright, Casey Mears, and Townsend Bell in Friday's qualifying for the Detroit News 100 at Michigan Speedway, but their results squarely placed them in positions to win tomorrow's race nonetheless. Brazilian Felipe Giaffone won the pole with a time of 0:39.287 = 183.267 mph. Mears qualified fourth with a fast lap of 0:39.485 = 182.348 mph. Bell, of Costa Mesa, Calif., fell victim to late session sunshine and breezes that not only affected his DirecPC Indy Lights Lola, but the times of the four other drivers remaining to qualify. Regardless, he qualified ninth at 0:39.666 = 181.516 mph. Bright, of Gold Coast, Australia, qualified fifth but also could have been a position or two better if the "elements" would have cooperated. Just as he was beginning his first green flag lap in qualifying, a cooling cloud cover cleared and instantly warmed the surrounding air. Bright's qualifying lap of 0:39.489 = 182.329 mph was slower than hoped but the result was partially out of his control. "Much depended on when you hit the track," said Bright. "Practically every minute changed from direct sun on the track to clouds blocking the sun to gusts of wind through the front or back straights. It was the luck of the draw in some cases. My warm-up lap was quicker than either of my two qualifying laps I think because they ran with cloud cover. A wind popped up through turns three and four on my green flag laps. I don't mean to make excuses but the physical elements mattered. I knew I wouldn't be at the top but I'm pleased to be fifth. It could have been much worse." Saturday's 50 lap/100 mile race is scheduled to drop the green flag at 4:15 p.m. ET.
