SAM SCHMIDT MOTORSPORTS READY FOR 16 INDY PRO SERIES RACES IN 2008
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- On Thursday, the Indy Racing League announced the 16 race schedule set for the 2008 Indy Pro Series season featuring an even mix of eight ovals with eight road/street circuits.
Among the highlights of the schedule include a return to the Kansas Speedway for the first time since 2004 (where Sam Schmidt Motorsports driver Thiago Medeiros won the pole and the race), all non-oval events being double-header weekends, and for the fourth straight year, the Freedom 100 will be run on "Carb Day" of the Indianapolis 500 race weekend.
Team owner, Sam Schmidt, found the announced schedule to be a step in the right direction for the series.
He said, "I really appreciate that the Indy Pro Series listened to our ideas regarding the schedule. We have a really good mix of tracks, and having half the races take place on double-header weekends will definitely help our budget."
The challenging mix of races will heavily test the talents of those looking to move up into the IndyCar Series as drivers will have to contest tracks varying from the high-speed 2.5-mile oval at Indianapolis to the small 7/8-mile Iowa Speedway to the challenges of the road and street circuits.
Sam Schmidt Motorsports has shown that the team can be competitive at each type of circuit as it has won on every track featured on the 2008 schedule except for one -- the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
"It will be a tough challenge to match the results we put up in 2007," Schmidt said. "We're certainly going to make every effort we can though. The series gets more and more competitive every year, but I know the whole team is confident in being able to challenge for another title in 2008."
All races will be broadcasted on ESPN2 with all on-track sessions viewable online at indycar.com.
