In the October 16 race report on titled, "Cunningham wins California to clinch championship," it was reported that Jeff Simmons went below the white line during his last lap effort to complete a pass for the lead.

The original report was inaccurate. Simmons was forced below the white line after coming into contact with Cunningham. When Simmons pulled to the inside of the leader, Cunningham moved to block the pass, drawing a penalty for "reckless and overly aggressive driving."

Cunningham was penalized 15 driver points and fined an undisclosed amount of money. Despite the penalty, Cunningham retained a 30 point advantage over Simmons in the final point standings.
