Prendeville Qualifies Seventh Friday at Kentucky Speedway
SPARTA, Ky., Aug. 10 - Andrew Prendeville, who will try his best to finish all 67 laps of the Indy Pro Series race at Kentucky Speedway tomorrow night for his Racing Laps for Best Friends program, earned the seventh starting spot for the race during time trials here Friday with his red-and-white Best Friends Animal Society No. 5.
The RLR/Andersen Racing driver from Morristown, N.J. took just 28.4089 seconds to travel over the 1.5-mile tri-oval during the qualifying session for an average speed of 187.547 miles per hour. He was just 0.5538 of a second off the new track record set by polesitter Hideki Mutoh of Tokyo.
Prendeville will start on the inside of Row 4 when the race begins at 9:10 p.m. Saturday. Live timing and scoring will be available on indycar.com/pro. The race will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 5:30 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, Aug. 16.
Under the Racing Laps for Best Friends program, fans pledge money to the Best Friends Animal Society based on the number of laps Prendeville completes in each of his races. Some fans make their donations to the not-for-profit organization at a special tent that volunteers man at the races, while others around the world use the program's Web site at racinglapsforbestfriends.com.
In addition to the per-lap program, fans can also purchase raffle tickets for 2008 Indy 500 tickets on the racinglapsforbestfriends.com Web site.
Although Prendeville has never tested or raced at Kentucky Speedway before, his qualifying result here Friday was his third-best of the season to date. It equaled his best qualifying result on an oval, as he also started seventh at the Milwaukee Mile.
Prendeville qualified third at the last race, held at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, and finished fourth. He also finished fourth in the Freedom 100 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May.
"Qualifying went well," Prendeville said Friday night. "I'm happy. It equals our best qualifying result on ovals.
"We have a good car for the race tomorrow night," he added. "The RLR/Andersen guys did an awesome job getting the car ready, and the new red-and-white paint scheme looks great."
When asked if it was an advantage to start on the inside, Prendeville said "Absolutely!
"We'll try to get a good start, move up as much as we can, and try our best to be there at the finish for the Racing Laps for Best Friends program," he said.
