Prendeville Off to a Good Start; Will Start Tenth Friday In Freedom 100 While Best Friends Volunteers Take Pledges at IMS
INDIANAPOLIS, May 24 - Indy Pro Series driver Andrew Prendeville got right down to business Thursday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and put the Best Friends Animal Society No. 5 tenth on the grid for tomorrow's Freedom 100 Indy Pro Series race.
Meanwhile, Best Friends Animal Society volunteers also were busy manning a tent for the Racing Laps for Best Friends program in the parking lot of the Hall of Fame Museum on the speedway grounds. They took pledges and explained how to pledge on-line for tomorrow's race - and future ones - at racinglapsforbestfriends.com.
The pledges are a unique way for sports fans and animal lovers to donate to Best Friends, which operates the largest no-kill animal sanctuary in the United States.
Through the racinglapsforbestfriends.com Web site, fans all over the world can pledge an amount per lap based on the number of laps they predict Prendeville will complete in each Indy Pro Series race, including tomorrow's Freedom 100 at IMS. At $1 per lap for a 40-lap race such as tomorrow's contest, the donation would be $40. If the car would only complete 25 laps, then the donation would be $25.
Fans on the Speedway grounds can also make pledges and straight donations at the Racing Laps for Best Friends tent through Sunday's Indianapolis 500. It is located east of the museum, directly across from the AAA transporter.
Donations may also be made by telephone at (435) 644-2001, extension 4801, or by mail.
Prendeville , 25, of Morristown, N.J., will start tomorrow's race from the outside of Row Five besides Jon Brownson thanks to his qualifying speed of 186.460 miles per hour in the RLR/Andersen Racing No. 5, which sports the Best Friends Animal Society logo. Twenty-four cars will start the race at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time, and live timing and scoring will be available at indycar.com/pro. The race will be broadcast on a same-day, tape-delayed basis at 4 p.m. Eastern time on ESPN2.
"The car was real good," Prendeville said after qualifying. "The wind didn't affect it too much. I think the RLR/Andersen Racing guys did a good job with the set-up. I think there's a little more speed in the Best Friends Animal Society car, and it's a big improvement from how we started at Homestead. We keep improving every time we go out. Hopefully we can keep improving.
"I hope all the fans will go to racinglapsforbestfriends.com and make their pledges," he added. "We'll do our best to complete all the laps tomorrow and get a good finish."
