Alex Lloyd Completes First Ever Oval Race
21 year old Alex Lloyd completed his first ever oval race in the Indy Pro Series at the Freedom 100 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, on the Friday of the Indy 500 weekend.
"The atmosphere was fantastic," explained Alex, "I could not believe how many fans turned up on carboration day. To race on my first ever oval at Indy on the speedway was just amazing. It most definitely rivaled racing at Monaco last year on the Sunday before the Grand Prix. It was an experience I will never forget."
On Thursday afternoon Alex completed the 2 lap qualifying run putting the Automatic Fire Sprinkler Inc. Machine 5th on the grid, with an average 2 laps of 184.0 mph.
The race proceeded on Friday 26th May in warm conditions with temperatures reaching the high eighties.
Alex made a good start following the 4th placed car through turns 1 and 2 before diving down the inside into turn 3 to snatch 4th position. The front 3 cars had managed to escape the pack and break the tow of Alex and the chasing group. From then on Alex and the car in the 5th position tried to draft their way back to the fight for the lead, but Alex just didn't have the car underneath him, and after the first half of the race understeer set in, eventually causing him to finish 5th.
"It was a tough race," Alex said, "we just didn't quite have the car to challenge for the win and the fact that we lost the tow on lap 1 really made it impossible to keep up."
"Being my first oval race I really learnt a lot, from my strategy on how to race and what it takes to get a car to go fast. I think the experience here will help a lot going into the next oval race at Milwaukee, and I think with a few tweaks to the car we can be in a position to win."
