Luyendyk Finishes 6th in California
Luyendyk netted a 6th place finish after rollercoaster of events in the California 100. After rolling off 9th on the grid, Luyendyk advanced two positions on the start but had to relinquished those positions when a yellow came out for a spinning Jay Drake. On the restart Luyendyk slowly moved up but lost touch with the leaders while attempting to pass Marty Roth. Once Luyendyk was free of Roth, Luyendyk and Nick Bussell stayed single file and slowly gained on the lead group. After getting in touch with the leaders Jaime Camara did a half spin and Luyendyk had to hit the brakes just avoiding Camara. Surprisingly enough a caution did not come out and Luyendyk lost touch with the leaders. Luyendyk eventually caught back up with the 4th and 5th positions but was unable to advance in the closing laps.
"The car really came on in the end of the race but we didn't catch any breaks. I want to thank Gary Peterson and the AFS team for opportunity to race this weekend and the outstanding job done. I think the outcome of the race would have been much different if our qualifying position was higher. I had to avoid a few accidents and that really put us behind."
