The 2014 Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires championship visits wine country for the final race weekend of the year on August 23rd/24th at Sonoma Raceway and will be the site of the conclusion of a thrilling championship battle between Gabby Chaves, Zach Veach and Jack Harvey.

The championship arrives in Sonoma after a topsy-turvy weekend at Milwaukee for the championship standings.  Chaves finished in third behind Matthew Brabham and the winner, Veach.  Veach gained 16 points on Chaves and made clear his game plan on heading into Sonoma with only a seven point deficit to the Colombian.

“With us being in second with two races to go, we’ve got a lot more to gain than we have to lose at this point so we’re just going to lay it all out there, go for race wins and try to claim the title as ours,” Veach said.

Veach also described the car’s preparation going to Sonoma as similar to how it is at Barber Motorsports Park.  Both tracks have a lot of elevation change, so car setup is crucial for a good lap time.

“A lot of the time, the setup at Sonoma is somewhat similar to [a setup at Barber, so we’re kind of starting with what we think is going to work and the main thing is that we’ve got to keep an open mind because we only have a few sessions before the weekend really starts,” Veach said.

His championship rivals will be nipping at his heels for a good weekend.  Gabby Chaves has had a string of good results since the dismal weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course.  He’s had two wins, two second places and two third place finishes in succession but has remained at the top of the table.

The other driver in contention to win the title is Jack Harvey.  Harvey surprised everyone by truly earning maximum points at Mid-Ohio by winning both races, winning the pole for both races, getting fastest lap in both races and leading the most laps (in fact, he led all of them) in both races.  He lies 23 points behind Chaves, so if Harvey wins one race, gains maximum bonus points and Chaves finishes third behind Veach, then Chaves will only have a two point lead over Veach and a five point lead over Harvey.

This championship is shaping up to be an exciting one with numerous outcomes that could take shape.
